Fire Safety Tips

Are your smoke alarms working?

Did you know that when you have a working fire alarm, it reduces your risk of dying in a fire by 50 percent? They’re crucial to your safety, but for them to work efficiently, you want to make sure they’re working right. When you want the best protection for yourself, install them on every level of the home especially outside your bedroom to give you the warning you need to take heed.

Always replace their battery once a year even when your smoke alarm is wired to the electrical system. This way, you have a backup in case your wires defect. Also, replace your smoke alarms every ten years. In many cases, fire alarms, even they’ve never gone off, they can expire. If you barely moved into a new home, you want to make sure that your fire alarms are newly replaced.

Practice a Fire Escape Plan

Make sure to have a plan to get out of your home in case of emergency. The best way to do this is by having two ways out of the room. In all your plans, make sure to have a designated adult to lead the children to safety. Have a backup plan in case this person is overcome by the smoke.

Smoke is toxic to the lungs which are why you want to teach kids to get low and go while they’re trying to leave the property. Practice feeling the cracks, doorknobs, and doors in case they get hot. Help your children master these steps. When they get to safety, have a meeting point.
